Application and Admission FAQs
When should I submit my application?
Applications may be submitted in OTCAS mid-January through November each year under two rolling admission cycles. Cycle 1 runs mid-January to mid-June where applicants receive a priority review. Cycle 2 runs mid-July through November for remaining seats to be filled by those with top scoring applications. Applications submitted Nov 1 through the last Friday in November must show all prerequisite and observation hours completed.
Is volunteer or work experience in occupational therapy required in order to apply?
Volunteer or work experience in occupational therapy is not required; however, 30 observation hours that support your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an occupational therapist are required. Our admission team can make available several resources to support your ability to observe occupational therapy virtually. Ten of the 30 hours for a job shadow of occupational therapy with client observation is required.
When applying to this program, can I still have prerequisites in progress?
Yes, you can complete the required prerequisites while completing your application; however, all pre-requisites must be completed before you begin the program. Five prerequisite courses must be completed to begin the application process. Official transcripts documenting the completing of the required courses will be required prior to orientation.
Can I substitute a similar course for one or more of these prerequisites?
The OTD Admission Committee may consider requests for course substitutions on a case-by-case basis. The applicant must submit the course description and syllabus for review and will be notified by the admissions team as to the request outcome.
Do you accept advanced placement (AP) credits in lieu of a letter grade to fulfill prerequisite courses?
Yes. The OTD program accepts all AP courses that were counted toward a student’s undergraduate degree as fulfilling prerequisite requirements. These must be documented on official transcripts.
Do prerequisite courses have an expiration date?
Applicants must complete anatomy/physiology courses within the last five (5) years prior to application or demonstrate ongoing work experiences that have kept this knowledge current (e.g., occupational therapy assistant, athletic trainer). With this work experience, only one course in anatomy/physiology is needed within the last five years. All remaining letter-graded prerequisite coursework is acceptable no matter when the coursework was completed. However, we strongly recommend that applicants take refresher courses as needed to fully prepare themselves for our accelerated OTD program.
